Lung Screening Program Officially Begins

A new screening program is set to make a significant impact on saving lives by preventing and detecting lung cancer at an earlier stage.

The Lung Screening Program incorporates clinical assessment and computerized tomography (CT) scans, specifically targeting individuals at a very high risk of developing lung cancer. Additionally, the program offers information on lung health and support for smoking cessation.

Health and Wellness Minister Michelle Thompson highlighted the importance of addressing cancer in the Nova Scotian community, emphasizing that enhancing healthcare involves improving cancer screening and care. The Lung Screening Program represents one of many initiatives in cancer care services aimed at preventing or detecting cancers earlier, ultimately leading to improved outcomes and saving lives.

Nova Scotians between the ages of 50 and 74, who have a history of daily smoking for 20 years or more at any point in their lives, can reach out to the program. A nurse will assess their personal risk of lung cancer, determining if they would benefit from a chest CT scan.

Individuals contacting the program will not only receive information about lung health but will also be provided with smoking cessation supports if applicable.

The Lung Screening Program is currently accessible in the central health zone (Halifax Regional Municipality and West Hants) by calling 1-833-505-LUNG (5864) and is scheduled to be implemented across the province over the next two years.

Recent enhancements in cancer care services in Nova Scotia include increased funding for community oncology clinics, facilitating access to care closer to home. Improved communication between oncology providers and patients has resulted in better care, reduced wait times, and improved outcomes. The introduction of the groundbreaking Ethos radiotherapy system with HyperSight imaging has significantly decreased the average number of treatments from 20 to five. Additionally, a new 10-year partnership with Varian positions Nova Scotians among the first in the world to access cutting-edge oncology technology and innovative programs.
